""I recently had a meeting in the San Diego area, and needed a hotel room for one evening’s stay. After searching, the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina came up with a rate of $143.00 per night for Lania King (standard room). I hadn’t stayed at this property before and decided with such a good rate, it would be a chance to see and review the resort.

Since we were only going to be gone for one evening, Susan was able to get away and join me. She took advantage of our Southwest Airlines Companion Pass to fly down for $5.60 in taxes. Say what you will about Southwest, but the Companion Pass we qualified for last year has been a much enjoyed benefit.

After landing at the airport we took an Uber over to the hotel. The San Diego Airport makes using Uber very easy, and has a dedicated ride sharing pickup area just on the other side of the pedestrian bridge. In 20 minutes we were able to get to the hotel and check in.

""Reception Desk

The associate at the reception desk was warm and friendly. While checking us in she thanked me for being a Globalist with World of Hyatt, and mentioned that an upgrade was available and asked if we wanted the “Marina View Corner Suite” room. We thanked her for the offer and accepted the suite. A few minutes later we were checked in, and proceeded to our suite.

The property is made up of a few buildings, and the hotel rooms can be located in one of five different structures. The tallest of these is the tower building which sets in the middle of resort, and where our corner suite was located, room 819. To get to the tower building from the reception area you take a short walk to the left once you exit the back of the main registration area. The grounds are nicely landscaped, and this route takes you by the cabana and pool areas. Once you are in the tower building, there is a simple unmanned lobby area with elevators to the room floors.

""

Walk out and to the left – the area is nicely landscaped

The corner suite is comprised of 2 main rooms, the bedroom (on entering to the right) is smaller and has the king bed, a built in back shelve and nightstand, and TV with table stand. The living room is to the left at the end of the hall. This space is larger and has a sofa sectional with large footrest/table, TV and credenza, and corner desk assembly with a lot of work space.

The bedroom is mostly open, with a pull fabric room partition made of translucent type netting. I wasn’t sure what to think of this, but you’re not going to have much seclusion in the bedroom with this separation. It would be fine for a couple staying together, but if your party included young children, older kids, or guests, the bedroom doesn’t have any privacy. The bathroom and closet are left off the entry hall when you first walk in.

You enter the bathroom through a mini-entry on the left hand side of the main entry. To your left is the closet and to your right is a cubby with a stand that contains the room safe and coffee station. The bathroom is directly ahead.

For a suite bathroom the setup is small and the vanity only has a single sink. It does look nice and I thought the shower had ample water pressure. The standard Hyatt Regency amenities are KenetMD, which are ok for this level of hotel. The hotel didn’t have robes, which is a miss for a suite room.

The corner suite’s have a small balcony with beautiful views of the marina. The views are this room’s best feature, and Susan thoroughly enjoyed them.

The Regency Club room is located on the 17th floor of the tower building. We visited that evening during the hors d’oeuvres time and enjoyed some of the offerings. The club itself is comprised of 2 rooms. One side is for food service and the other has a set of tables for dining. Both sides have windows and balconies, again to enjoy area views. You enter the club on the right hand side walking into the dining space. To the left is the room for food offerings.

The food service side has an honor bar on the left and a large sideboard for food service on the right. Against the back wall is more counter space for storage. This area also has a couple small fridges for cold drinks. The evening hors d’oeuvres included cut vegetables, crackers, cold cuts, garlic bread and similar fare. It was fresh and tasty, but also pretty basic.

The dining space has three or so tables, a computer station and a coffee setup on the back wall. The Regency Club is on the 17th floor, so again the views are beautiful and is certainly a high point for this hotel club room. Being on the smaller side I would imagine the space gets crowded from time to time, although for our visit this never happened.

In Summary:

The Hyatt Regency Mission Bay is a perfectly fine Hyatt. The location is beautiful, the rooms are in good condition and we were well treated for our visit. The room’s themselves are decorated to an ok 4 star level, the bed is comfortable and pool area looks like it would be very nice for family’s with children. If you enjoy views of the water and marina, this place definitely excels at this. Even though I wouldn’t rate this location as amazing or fantastic, it is a solid value at $143.00 before taxes and fees ($25.00 resort fee as well). Would I stay here again…? Sure, for the right price.
